Three Important Mechanical Properties of Structural Steel

In terms of performance, there are three important mechanical properties of structural steel:

Yield Strength

The yield strength of structural steel refers to the minimum amount of force needed to permanently deform the material, as determined by a tensile test. Load-bearing structural steel has a yield strength greater than 35,000 psi. Non-load-bearing structural steel has a minimum yield strength of 33,000 psi.

Tensile Strength

Tensile strength refers to the maximum amount of force needed to cause permanent failure. An easy way to differentiate between yield and tensile strength is that the former represents the point at which structural steel will bend and the latter the point at which it will break. Tensile strength for structural steel typically spans between 36,000–50,000 psi but can reach up to 58,000–70,000 psi.

Elongation refers to the elasticity of structural steel and how much it can bend, stretch, or compress before rupturing. The rupture point occurs somewhere between the material’s yield strength and tensile strength and is expressed as a percentage of its original length. For instance, A36 structural steel, one of the most common types, can elongate up to 20% of its original length.

Fabricating Structural Steel

Typically comprising 25% of a building’s structure, structural steel is a hot commodity. Professional fabricators who want to succeed in the industry need the proper equipment to keep their work pristine and production running on schedule. That’s why so many structural steel and plate fabrication shops rely on the power of BeamCut—the most advanced robotic plasma cutting technology on the market.
